Crystal Schumacker is a Michigan sculpture artist living in Monroe County. She uses consciously-sourced specimens, foraged materials and handmade objects to create quirky, beautiful dioramas of personified insects. Her work is meant to examine the relationships between humans and the perceived “nature.”

Since experiencing the sudden death of her son in 2023, Crystal has begun using her art as a way of exploring and healing the culture around death in her communities. She uses posed insects to act out different death rituals from her home and abroad.
